In Shortbus, all the aspects of the Sexuality (solo, bisexual, heterosexual, homosexual) are frankly staged. These representations are not free. They show the sexuality, and the search for a fulfillment through her, as reality but also as metaphor of a road leading to one and in the revelation of its identity. The film is determinedly turned to the hope and the poetry, with notes of expressionisme and pop culture. The social aspect of a merciless urban reality is also suggested in the film (how to like as artist in a city as New York where is needed so money to live? ; Certain characters – men- have no employment). John Cameron Mitchell’s film is going to count in the history of the cinema.

Elles montrent la sexualité, et la recherche d’un accomplissement à travers elle, comme réalité mais aussi comme métaphore d’un chemin conduisant à soi et à la révélation de son identité. Le film est résolument tourné vers l’espoir et la poésie, avec des notes d’expressionisme et de culture pop. L’aspect social d’une réalité urbaine impitoyable est aussi suggéré dans le film (comment tenir en tant qu’artiste dans une ville comme New-york où il faut tellement d’argent pour vivre ? ; certains personnages – des hommes- n’ont pas d’emploi).
